• Autism: Trauma and Behaviour

     20.00 160.00
One word that often arises in conjunction with 'autism' - particularly when discussing Autistic children - is 'behaviour.' We hear terms like 'autism behaviours' or 'challenging behaviour' or 'repetitive behaviour' or 'dysfunctional behaviours.' It's no secret that AUsome Training has issues with the B-Word. It is almost always used to define actions in negative ways, but more than that, it is seeded through books, videos, discussions, training and more as if there's nothing more to 'those people' beyond their 'behaviours.'
Behaviour - or actions, responses, reactions - does not emerge magically from the ether but is the product of experiences and an expression of personality, of needs, and a direct response to those experiences. This is how we have understood 'behaviour' for decades now, yet Autistics continue to be treated as if we are just mechanisms without feelings or intellect.
This course is ideal for relatives, educators and those in caring professions living and working with younger Autistic people. All content is directly applicable to those living and working with adults also. Course length 1hr 45mins

  • Autistic and ADHD

     30.00 200.00
On the face of it, many characteristics of being Autistic and many of those for ADHD seem to fly in opposite directions. However, probably about a third of Autistics also are ADHD, so how does that even work? Can you really be distracted and focused, novelty-oriented and sameness-oriented, empathetic and unempathetic, creative and pedantic? A lot of the answers lie in breaking down simple assumptions and stereotypes like those, but also in digging deeper into how and why characteristics such as these arise to start with. By exploring questions like these, we will build a picture of how life works for ‘shiny sparkles’ (Autistic ADHDers), and how the combination can often result in some exceptional creativity along the way. This course is ideal for Autistics suspecting they have ADHD. but would also be useful for teachers, SNAs, GPs, family members, therapists etc. Course Length 2hrs 30mins Investment includes certificate of completion, lifetime access and presentation slides.

  • Autistic Joy And Passionate Interests

     15.00 150.00
with Scott Neilson, Autistic author, trainer and consultant duration 1h 13m    |   for Autistic people, their families, support professionals and educators.

The association of Autistics with 'special interests' is well known. The preferred phrasing - Passionate Interests - tells us more about the depth of those interests and about Autistic people themselves. In the words of fellow AUsome trainer MAQQI, Autistics are "passionate people in a vivid world" and it is that passion and vividness - and the joy this generates - that Scott focuses on here.

He also focuses on Autistic joy, on interest-led learning, and where interests can lead to for Autistic people.

    • Why passionate interests are so important to Autistic people
    • Positive implications our interests they have for our wellbeing

Sensory sensitivity is the latest addition to the diagnostic criteria used by clinicians assessing Autistics, less than a decade ago. • How Autistic Minds Work

     30.00 200.00
Much that gets written about Autistics focuses on description, of traits, of ‘symptoms,’ of ‘behaviours,’ of likes and dislikes, of abilities and impairments. This is akin to describing the exterior of a house while remaining oblivious to how that building functions as a home to live in. Join us to explore the How and Why behind the ways Autistic people think, feel, imagine, hope, and how that plays out in real life scenarios. This course is ideal for parents, teachers, SNAs & therapists, but would also be useful for Autistic adults Course length 2hrs 30mins Investment includes certificate of completion, lifetime access and presentation slides.
