On the face of it, many characteristics of being Autistic and many of those for ADHD seem to fly in opposite directions. However, probably about a third of Autistics also are ADHD, so how does that even work? Can you really be distracted and focused, novelty-oriented and sameness-oriented, empathetic and unempathetic, creative and pedantic? A lot of the answers lie in breaking down simple assumptions and stereotypes like those, but also in digging deeper into how and why characteristics such as these arise to start with. By exploring questions like these, we will build a picture of how life works for ‘shiny sparkles’ (Autistic ADHDers), and how the combination can often result in some exceptional creativity along the way. One word that often arises in conjunction with 'autism' - particularly when discussing Autistic children - is 'behaviour.' We hear terms like 'autism behaviours' or 'challenging behaviour' or 'repetitive behaviour' or 'dysfunctional behaviours.' It's no secret that AUsome Training has issues with the B-Word. It is almost always used to define actions in negative ways, but more than that, it is seeded through books, videos, discussions, training and more as if there's nothing more to 'those people' beyond their 'behaviours.'Behaviour - or actions, responses, reactions - does not emerge magically from the ether but is the product of experiences and an expression of personality, of needs, and a direct response to those experiences. This is how we have understood 'behaviour' for decades now, yet Autistics continue to be treated as if we are just mechanisms without feelings or intellect.This course is ideal for relatives, educators and those in caring professions living and working with younger Autistic people. Autistic: Sex & Gender (Gender creativity and the spectrum) course is delivered by Katie Munday. Katie was diagnosed Autistic in their late 20s. Katie is currently studying an MRes in Gender Studies exploring trans and / or non-binary Autistic adults’ narratives to create recommendations for future research in this area. Katie reviews books for Routledge Publishers and contributes to an LGBTQIA+ Autistic blog called AIM for the Rainbow. They also write and do podcasts through Aucademy – an Autistic led educational and social platform. Why are we even talking about autism and trauma? What we are beginning to see quite clearly from most current research is that levels of trauma are higher in the Autistic population than in the general public. "Autism training" and "autism courses" which are designed without Autistic input can mean that there is actually very little real and meaningful understanding of autism. Unfortunately trauma responses in Autistic children and adults are not always recognised. They are often misinterpreted as "Autistic Behaviours" but there is no Autistic behaviour only human behaviour. When trauma responses are ignored then this can lead to even more trauma for the Autistic person. When we view Autistic behaviour as human behaviour we begin to see a very different picture to that painted by misinformed professionals who are basing their ideas on outdated ideology.
