Description
Why are we even talking about autism and behaviour ? Because Autism is often considered a behavioural “condition”. But really what often manifests as behaviour is more accurately described as a reaction to the way the world responds to Autistic people. Behind every behaviour is an emotion and this course will introduce you to the idea that there is no “Autistic behaviour”, there is just human behaviour.
When we view Autistic behaviour as human behaviour we begin to see a very different picture to that painted by misinformed professionals who are basing their ideas on outdated ideology. Most autism courses on behaviour will talk about “redirecting” or “changing” behaviours but our Autistic-led course wants to empower you to understand the reason behind the behaviours because there is always a reason.
Course Content:
- What is Behaviour?
- Behaviour as Communication
- Stimming and its many functions
- Analysing Behaviour
- Changing the environment not the person
In this empowering session for parents, teachers, SNAs, teaching assistants and other professionals, Evaleen Whelton will discuss why Autistic people young and old do the things we do. Evaleen is founder AUsome Training and Konfident Kidz. She is also author of the Konnect Social Skills series. In this session on autism and behaviour, designed by Evaleen, our trainer will look at how professionals and parents, with their hearts in the right place – may even be inflicting trauma without realising it. And how families, professionals and groups can work together to reduce traumatic life-experiences for Autistic people by making small but significant changes the environment.
